September So Far

September 21, 2016
Time for a catch up with how September has stacked up so far.

The first team opened the month by disappointingly bowing out of the FAW Trophy at the hands of Lucas Cwmbran as they failed to hold a 3-1 lead and went out 4-3. There was a decent performance then at Spencer Youth, though the side were undone by a last minute winner to go down 1-0. More disappointment the following Saturday as another lead was squandered, this time a Jamie Laurent strike was not enough as Pentwynmawr Athletic took advantage of a lethargic second half to claim a point in a 1-1 draw. Last Saturday saw the chance to strike back at Lucas Cwmbran in the league, and finally there were three points to celebrate. Despite losing Tom Morgan to a red card after only 18 minutes and being 2-1 behind the side fought back to take a deserved 3-2 win with goals from Jordan Jones and two from Jace Williams. They'll hope to follow this up this week as the visit New Inn.

The second team have had a tough start to their season as they try to gel the new players into a cohesive unit. After a 2-1 defeat at Blaenavon Blues they had the misfortune to run into a strengthened PILCS side, and in a game neither side will remember fondly went down 7-6. They followed that up with a 5-1 defeat at Pontypool Town in a wretched performance, Jordan Jones with the consolation. This previous Saturday perversely saw a much better performance but a worse score. Travelling to league leaders and promotion favourites Wainfelin Bluebirds they held their own at 2-1 for the best part of an hour, Anthony Poulsom halving the deficit until the home side drew away in the closing stages. This week finally sees the first home game of the season and a game against a Forgside team containing some familiar faces.

This month also saw the first of the cup draws made. The first team will travel to Rassau in the first round of the Amateur Cup with the prize a second round trip to either Race or Underwood Athletic. The second team will make the short journey to Govilon in round one of the Gwent Central Open Cup.

Midweek Roundup

September 1, 2016
Both teams saw action this midweek and both saw positive results. The firsts traveled to Abertillery Excelsiors Woodfield Park and took all three points in an entertaining victory. Jace Williams fired the visitors into the lead, but it was down to some excellent keeping by Dai Pearce for the Wasps to retain their lead. With the hosts denied as they camped in our half they were then caught with a sucker punch. After a corner won on the break Alistair Paton planted a header onto the post where ...

You Wait For One Goal.....

August 28, 2016
....and five turn up in one game. The Wasps welcomed another side that had struggled thus far in the first couple of weeks of the season in F.C. Tredegar. The hosts made a quick start and were on the front foot from the opening exchanges, finally getting their just reward when a clever through ball was delicates lifted past the advancing keeper by Jace Williams. The visitors eventually got a foot hold in the game as both teams battled for the remainder of the half. The second half though saw ...

Fixture Update

August 24, 2016
After the original fixture had been reversed, this Saturdays first team fixture has now reverted back to be a home game with F.C. Tredegar. The side will be looking for a big step up following a second league defeat at Mathern last night. It was another case of mistakes being punished while being unable to return the favour. With both sides still looking to open their league account, Saturday should be an interesting affair.

Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other

August 21, 2016
The opening two Saturdays of the season saw vastly differing outcomes for the first team.

They opened up with a trip to the Aberdare Valley to take on Cwmaman Workmens Club in round one of the FAW Trophy. The hosts had the better of the ninety minutes, taking the lead early on before an equaliser from Connor Flook. Cwmaman retook the lead before half time, and it took until the last quarter of an hour for Jace Williams to fashion a second equaliser. Into extra time, it was our fitness and exp...

The Season Starts Here

August 7, 2016
The start to the season proper is almost upon us, so time for a quick catch up on where things stand.

The first team, as last year, open their competitive fixtures with an FAW Trophy first round fixture. The draw paired us with Cwmaman Workmens Club of the Aberdare Valley League, at their ground, to be played on Saturday 13th August. The league campaign should start on Tuesday 16th August, but with opening day opponents Cromwell Youth unfortunately withdrawing from the Gwent County League, the...

The Old 1-2

April 19, 2016
As it comes to the business end of the season the first team were to welcome the current top two team in the division to the Rec with the possible role of kingmakers. As it turned out, they certainly had another major say in the final shake up.

Saturday saw second place Spencer Youth travel to the village looking to keep up their promotion push. After the midweek high scoring affair with Cromwell it was another back and forth thriller. The visitors opened the scoring, before Ben Ward struck tw...

Midweek Matters

April 14, 2016
Both teams took to the Rec this midweek and although both played some entertaining football, they had vastly differing fortunes.

The firsts welcomed Cromwell Youth to the village on Tuesday for what turned out to be one of if not the most entertaining game of the season. The visitors started in storming fashion, and took the lead when one of their forwards chased down a lost cause and managed to pull the ball back to a team mate in front of goal. That though spurred the Wasps into a purple pat...

That's That

April 11, 2016
The first team entertained Ynysddu Welfare this past Saturday knowing that nothing but full points from now on, plus a few favours, were required to make the promotion dream a reality. That though all went up in smoke during a defensive nightmare.

Firstly though, Thursday night saw the second team host Blaenavon Blues, looking to keep up their push for a top five finish. Though they couldn't gain the three points that would have secured that spot, they held out for a 1-1 draw, Charlie Lewis-P...
